Go Play Northwest 2009

Go Play NW 2009 was our best year yet! We got together over the weekend of June 26-28, 2009, at the Freehold Theatre in the Belltown neighborhood of downtown Seattle. We kicked off the weekend with the Friday Night Feast, a private buffet dinner (including beer and vegetarian options) and had a great time catching up with old friends and meeting new ones, without the hassle of crowded bars and poor service. The feast was followed by gaming time Friday night in addition to the usual Saturday and Sunday schedule blocks.

Go Play Northwest 2009 will be held at the Freehold Theatre in the Belltown neighborhood of downtown Seattle. The theatre offers three rooms with plenty of space for games, plus the hallway's comfy chairs provide a chillout space.

Belltown is one of Seattle's oldest neighborhoods, extending from the center of downtown northwest along the waterfront to the Seattle Center (where the Space Needle is) and lower Queen Anne. It features numerous restaurants and bars, boutiques, and galleries.

The theatre is between Bell Street and Blanchard Street, closer to Blanchard Street. Note that Second Avenue is one-way (roughly) southbound. On-street parking is hard to find and parking lots tend to be expensive; see the Transportation and Parking page for more information and alternatives to driving.

From SeaTac International Airport and all points south of Seattle:

Take I-5 northbound toward Seattle
Take exit 165 on the left side to Seneca Street
Turn right onto Fourth Avenue
Proceed about .7 miles north on Fourth Avenue to Bell Street
Turn left onto Bell Street and proceed two blocks to Second Avenue

Attractions/Visiting

Burke Museum
The University of Washington's Burke Museum's collections offer an amazing trek through the culture, history, geology, natural history, and prehistory of the Pacific Northwest. Beautiful permanent collections and rotating exhibits, as well as activities for children, are sure to make every visit a wonderful experience.

Pike Place Market
Pike Place Market is a way cool place to check out. It's a labrynthine maze of shops, bars, nooks, and crannies with a fish market on top. You'll absolutely want to include it your next role-playing campaign. There's also a good comics and collectables shop with a decent games rack as well.

Seattle Aquarium
Located on the waterfront, the Seattle Aquarium lets visitors see, explore and touch the underwater world. Popular exhibits include Life of a Drifter, Life on the Edge, the marine mammals, and many daily talks, feeding times, and demonstrations.

Tillicum Village
Located on Blake Island State Park, Tillicum Village offers a Northwest traditional-style salmon feast, Native American dances and stories, and the cruise there gives beautiful views of Seattle, Puget Sound and Mt. Rainer. For a cruise, entertainment, and all-you-can-eat alder-smoked salmon, it's a really great deal. Pick a sunny day for maximum enjoyment!

Woodland Park Zoo
One of the best zoos in North America, the Woodland Park Zoo presents animals in settings as close as possible to their preferred habitat. Crowd pleasers include the tiger cub born on December 12, 2006; the new Zoomazium exhibit for kids; the bears at the Northern Trail exhibit; feeding times, including the popular the raptors; and many other exhibits and activities.

Alas, The Dreaming does not have a website, but it does have a very good choice of indie and small press games. Easily accessed by several bus routes; located in the north end of the U District.

Berserk Games
A great place to buy board games at about 10% to 15% off retail. They make their money on Magic Card Singles over the interweb and mostly have a store front so people can come buy and pick them up. Great selection though of board games.

Transportation and Parking

The Freehold Theatre is located at 2222 Second Avenue, Seattle, WA 98121. See the Convention Location page for driving directions.

Parking in downtown Seattle is generally expensive. On-street parking in downtown Seattle is $2.50 per hour from 8 AM to 6 PM and limited to 2-hour blocks; it is free overnight but hard to find. Parking lots and garages are in the range of $15 to $25 for "all-day" (that is, daytime hours) parking, and $10 to $20 for overnight parking.

We recommend using local transit whenever possible. Many of the major Metro Transit bus routes run within a block of the theatre, down either First or Third Avenues (and some buses run down Second Avenue as well).

GM/Facilitator Sign-UpBegins on May 1
To sign up as a GM or facilitator, you will need to add your name and game system to the table on the Game Sign-Up page. That will be enough for now to start shaping up the schedule; eventually you'll need all of this information:

Your name
The game system
Your scenario title (you can skip this if you want, but it's better to provide something catchy)
A description of the game or scenario you want to run
The number of players you can have

Note that Saturday afternoon has two shorter sessions at 2.5 hours each, so you can sign up for both to run one longer game for 5 hours total. You can also offer to run the same game in multiple sessions if you like.

Player Sign-Up

Begins at NOON PST on June 1 (NOTE: We will not count any sign-ups made before noon PST, June 1.)

To sign up for a game, just add a comment with your intention to the game's individual thread. You will need a Wetpaint account.

Please be sure we can identify you from your comment, especially if your Wetpaint name is not your real name.
We strongly encourage everyone to sign up individually for games, as opposed to signing up a whole group of friends at once.

Put your name, the name of your game, and the number of players you can have into a table cell in the column for the time slot you want. (Note: We are now asking you to include the number of players; sorry that we did not clarify that earlier.)
Sign up under "open gaming" if you just want to facilitate/run pick-up games for whomever's available.
If you want to move your game to a different time, just edit the table again.
We are not limited to six games per time slot - if you need to, add more rows to the table.

At noon PST on June 1, we will open up discussion threads for each game on the schedule so that players can sign up. We'll include the information provided in the table—time slot, GM, game, number of players—and once the threads are open, GMs can provide further information such as a description of the scenario if they want.

The Elysian is a very fine brewpub with a variety of distinctive homegrown brews of excellent quality. It's got a big bar space and a hip, friendly atmosphere. The Elysian is a must visit if you're a beer aficionado.

It's not as well known as the coffee, but Seattle is also a major center for Ethiopian food. Don't let the unpretentious atmosphere fool you, Mesob is one of the best Ethiopian restaurants in town. It also happens to be very inexpensive. Mesob has two eating areas. Don't be fooled by the front room. The real party happens in the back.

Nightlife

The Mercury
The Mercury has a reputation as the best goth dance club in the city. It's located in the basement of an entirely different business and not necessarily easy to find, and you need to be with a member to get in. If you're interested in taking part in a night at the mercury, it's probably a good idea to use the wiki or the forums to organize it. There are sure to be some members going to Go Play who will be glad to bring in some guests.

Go Play NW helped to run a story games lounge at ConQuest 2008.This was a room dedicated to playing our favorite role-playing games, emphasizing heavy-story games such as In a Wicked Age. (In fact that's pretty much all anyone played.) The event was held Saturday and Sunday, February 16 and 17, 2008.
